Purpose: Provide strategic marketing and communications consultancy to the public and private sector

· National Marketing Manager Learning and Skills Council 1999 - 2002

The UK’s largest Government Agency - responsible for post-16 training and education in England

Purpose: Develop and implement product and corporate marketing strategies and plans to raise awareness and take up of education and training amongst key target markets (14 – 19 year olds, adults and the business sector)

Key achievements:
- Set-up the external communications department for the national office, establishing working relations with key partners and the 47 newly established local Learning and Skills Councils
- Managed the LSC and product brands, including development of full branding guidelines, 3rd party guides, accreditation marks and Office 2000 based standard templates for use by all 5,000 staff
- Established national research priorities to inform communication and programme strategy development in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills and other key partners
- Developed online marketing plans and strategies – portal based web and extranet
- Engineered marketing best practice for suppliers, enabling them to increase the effectiveness of their sales and marketing efforts resulting in all targets being met or surpassed

- Developed, launched and implemented new products and services, successfully establishing the company as a provider of business research and evaluation services
- Assisted companies to develop their business and services including a business improvement plan for the Alfred McAlpine Stadium and an innovation service for Sussex Enterprise
- Worked as part of a team that assisted the DTI and DfES to develop policy and programmes including Advisor competencies and functional maps for the Business Link network

Purpose: Develop trade and information policies and strategies and to lobby Government on behalf of business as well as producing business development, marketing and communication strategies and plans, new products and services designed to increase membership and income from other services.

Key achievements
- Set up the Chambers international trade division and small business service increasing income from sources other than membership fees by more than 300%.
- Developed and introduced new products and services including consultancy and training for SMEs, trade publications and newsletters, leading to an increase in the membership base of more than 10%
- Planned and implemented a new IT based information strategy and service, including the introduction of new media achieving a 50% growth to more than 40,000 business enquiries annually
- Established the Chamber as a key player in the development of international trade policy and set-up trade links, bi-lateral trade and foreign investment relations with more than 50 countries
- Developed with key local partners a joint marketing organisation to promote KwaZulu-Natal’s tourism, business and investment options


· Senior Marketing Consultant KwaZulu Finance and Investment Corporation 1989 – 1993
Quasi-Government development agency involved in Banking, Housing, Commercial and Industrial Development; employing more than 1000 staff and with a property portfolio exceeding 3 million sq feet

Purpose: Develop and implement marketing plans and strategies to promote KwaZulu-Natal as a viable investment and business locality. Activity included the promotion of the organisation’s industrial and commercial premises, location consultancy, finance and venture capital services

Key achievements
- Successfully planned and launched the Corporation’s promotional drive into Europe and North America increasing business from this area by more than 100%
- Developed and implemented new products and services that led to the loan book increasing by more than 20% with a corresponding 7% increase in employment in the area. These included the successful development and introduction of a venture capital fund and a joint finance programme
- Developed marketing plans and strategies that led to a consistent 98% occupation of the industrial and commercial property owned and an increase of 40% in working capital and asset based loans
- Re-branded the international marketing programme, initiated and developed working relationships and co-ordinated marketing strategies and plans with the public and private sector

- Developed new markets including a profitable and highly successful foray into the farming sector, building regional turnover growth by more 250% in 1985 and 1986
