PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT

UK Sales Director January 1987 – April 1991. VSI Electronics, Harlow.

A specialist distributor of semiconductors with a t/o in excess of £8M. I was the top sales producer every year I was with the Company, quadrupling sales during that period and maintaining a 27% margin. Implementation of the sales and marketing strategy, which included a Key Account focus. Training and development of internal and external sales staff. Direct P&L responsibility for day-to-day operations for 13 external & 10 internal salespeople.

Field Sales Engineer October 1984 – December 1986. Steatite Group, Birmingham.

Growth of customer base in the South of England covering an area of all counties below the M4. My greatest successes came from a targeted approach – selecting and working with only those customers that could deliver enough sales turnover and profit to hit my targets. Power Products Manager responsible for sales & marketing a range of highly technical components across the UK . This required me to be trained to the same level as the Manufacturers engineers and understand all the technicalities of the products, allowing our Company to become a specialist distributor for the product category as a whole.

Calibration & Repair November 1983 – October 1984. ACS, Portsmouth.
Engineer

Calibration and repair of electronic test equipment, including DMM’s, scopes, meters, bridges, etc. This work required me to learn the intricacies of all kinds of test equipment and have the ability to fault-find and repair to component level. Due to my basic training in the Navy I was one of only 3 engineers who could work on old valve based products and this meant that I often had to commission and service equipment at the client’s premises.

Radar Test Engineer January 1983 – September 1983. Marconi, Portsmouth.

Setting to work, repair and commissioning of weapons radar systems. The work here involved testing, fault-finding and repair of populated pcb’s, sub-units, units and systems to component level. My successes here included improving times to production by adopting strategies not always apparent by the specifications of the work sheets; a common sense approach to systems fault-finding rather than just theory based; having an overall understanding of radar systems despite having only parts of the system to work with.

Electronics Technician February 1977 – February 1983. Royal Navy

Maintenance and repair of ships radar & sonar systems.
Leading Hand in charge of welfare of 27 ratings. Leading Hand in charge of a damage control station. The Navy recognised my leadership skills within my 1st week in the service and promoted me immediately to Deputy Class Leader for the initial 13 weeks of training, despite being one of the youngest recruits. On my 2nd posting I was the only rating from 25 who could work unassisted on any of the squadron’s radar systems despite being one of the most junior rates. This meant that my senior rates and supervisors could spend their time with less able ratings than myself.

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

Learning! - I crave knowledge and I love sharing it with others to get the best out of people. I have a passion for developing people and creating environments that help them to reach their maximum potential in all that they wish to achieve.

I am Deputy Chairman of the Business Club within the Chamber of Commerce in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire and this allows me to share my knowledge and experience with other business managers as well as contributing to the well being of the community.

I would like to study for two degree courses that interest me, a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Applied Coaching Studies through De Montfort University, and a Masters Degree in People Development either through Reading, East Anglia or Brighton Universities. As my time is usually at a premium I have undertaken private study at my own pace through pursuing the suggested reading-lists for these courses.

I love sport of all kinds and rugby in particular. I have played and coached at Club and County levels and I am currently a Coaching Adviser to Nomads RFC, when I have the time!

Having grown up in the Valleys of South Wales, I often feel the urge to get away from the cities and back to the countryside. I spend spare time strolling through green fields, running up hills or trekking along rugged coastlines and I find that this helps me to focus, as well as keeping me fit!
