1998 – Current General Manager – Logistics and Supply Chain

Cork International Ltd, Nottingham

An international group, the UK division employs 1200 staff with a sales turnover of £100m per annum. Supplying non-food own label and branded products to the major grocery multiples and pharmacy retailers throughout the UK, Republic of Ireland and Europe. An executive member of the UK board reporting to the UK Managing Director.

Responsible for two distribution centres with 400 employees. Direct reports include a Logistics Controller and 2 Distribution Centre Managers.

Managing all aspects of the supply chain, from supply and inventory management, conversion and storage to order fulfilment and store delivery. Total overhead and expense budget of £8.5 million.

Achievements to date:

Developed a strategy to deliver increased customer service whilst reducing working capital employed in stock. Resulted in the majority of SKU’s having 4 weeks stock whilst maintaining 98% customer service.

Closed the UK manufacturing facility and relocated manufacturing equipment to a joint venture in China, culminated in the reduction of overhead expenditure by £3.5 million per annum.

Developed a second distribution centre, handling conversion and consolidation of our reverse logistics operation, reduced returns in progress by £500,000.

Implemented an Enterprise Resource Planning system, to provide an effective planning and purchasing process (MRP). Ensures that Cork remains competitive in the market.

Implemented a robust forecasting tool (MerciaLincspc). Delivering forecast accuracy improvements of 50%.

Established S & OP reviews developing the principal of operating to one set of numbers, giving visibility to supply chain of issues and constraints enabling proactive resolution before they impact the customer.

1995-1998 MD Foods Distribution Controller

Responsible for policy and strategic distribution planning for nine manufacturing sites, two chilled cross dock operations and one ambient operation, distributing and consolidating UK and European products.

Achievements included:

Introduced a pick to nil, cross-dock, drop and drive process enabling compliance with Tesco specifications thus retaining a £3 million contract supplying yellow fats and cheeses.

Introduced a centralised ambient product warehousing to facilitate economies of scale re RH & D and transport, giving cost savings of £200,000 per annum.

Decentralised our distribution operations (230 drivers & 200 prime movers) and introduced activity based costing and KPI’s. This demonstrated that the operation compared favourably to third party contractors.

Introduced automatic vehicle scheduling with performance monitoring by a satellite vehicle location system in real time; provided efficiency savings of approximately 9% per annum.

Out-sourced vehicle repair centres and developed a vehicle purchasing policy, which led to annual savings in excess of £1,000,000.

1993-1995 Northern Foods Regional Distribution Manager (Yorkshire region)

Responsible for the Distribution of 2 manufacturing sites. Held a budget of £3.3 million with the responsibility for 9 managerial and 105 operational staff. The customer profile being split between Major multiples, Wholesale, Semi-Retail and Inter-Company (cross docking).

Evaluated costs and developed a plan to cut overheads and increase efficiency. The plan included the rescheduling of routes, introduction of new shift patterns and the pre assembly of loads based on forecast. Successful implementation following union negotiation concluded with savings in excess of £500,000.

1990-1993 Northern Foods Transport Manager Middlesborough

Responsible for 2 managerial and 75 operational staff holding a budget of £2.2 million. Conducted and delivered a report into loading, routing and driver performance. This resulted in the investment in an appropriate fleet with organised picking and despatch; Returns included lower delivered costs and increased service efficiencies. Instigated analysis into manufacturing schedules, ensuring sufficient product was available for timely completion of vehicle loading, giving net savings in excess of £100,000 per annum.
