Nov 1998 – May 1999 Major - Support Company Commander – London & USA

Responsible for the operations, training, administration and careers of 140 men and women.
Tasked with the successful planning and implementation of an 8-week overseas training package for 650 personnel in USA concentrating on all aspects of operations, command, control and logistics.
Liased with US Special Forces and planned and conducted joint exercises with them.
Responsible for management and husbandry of in excess of £2m of high tech equipment and systems.
Charged with a working account of £2.5k daily.

Main Achievement – Successfully balancing rigorous training demands at the same time as overseeing the re-roling of the unit and changes in the HR practices.


Nov 1997 – Nov 1998 Major – Recruit Training Company – Pirbright, Surrey

Responsible for the training and personal development of 220 16-25 year olds during the initial stages of their military service.
Organised the operations, training and employment of 35 teaching and support staff.
Oversaw the introduction of complete new IT system with corresponding changes to working practices.
Budget holder responsible for the management of two working accounts worth in excess of £15k and capital resources in excess of £1.5m.
Responsible to Chief Executive for 15% p.a. efficiency savings in the training environment and commensurate increases in output as well as the implementation of new working practices and legislation.
Briefing up to Chief Executive level on all aspects of operations and change management.

Main Achievement – Solely responsible for a reduction in trainee wastage by 12% and an increase in output by 30% without increase in costs, representing an efficiency saving significantly in excess of the 15% target.


Dec 1995 – Nov 1997 Captain – Adjutant – Infantry Battalion – London, Canada, N. Ireland and Shropshire

Personnel Manager for an operational infantry battalion of 750 personnel, responsible for all aspects of career management, pay, discipline and legislation and pastoral care.
Central part of the successful operations team in N. Ireland including the training, deployment and recovery of all troops from the mainland and the planning and execution of many successful operations in an anti-terrorist environment.
Commanded the Bearer Party for the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and co-ordinated the associated media interest.
Planned and executed 8 – week arduous overseas training exercise in western Canada.

Main Achievement - Reduction in the wastage rate of soldiers and the resultant 20% under manning of key posts to 5% by application of sound HR practices and good management principles.


Dec 1993 - Dec 1995 Captain – Instructor – Young Officers’ Wing, School of Infantry - Warminster

Responsible for the leadership training and personal development of newly qualified officers aged 20-26.
Working with little supervision to develop a diverse number of technical and leadership skills in a relatively loosely structured work environment.
Central member of recruitment team tasked with recruiting potential officers from universities with a proven degree of success.
Member of Low Intensity Conflict Team tasked with training and advising organisations and other nations on Peace Support and Peace Enforcement operations in low intensity conflict areas.
Undertook formal staff and middle management training at Junior Division Staff College in Camberley attaining a place in the top 5% of 150 students.

Main Achievement – Spearheaded a drive to reinforce core values and skills in an innovative and exciting manner in the leadership training environment helping students to attain an above average number of “Distinction” passes.

Responsible for all training, operational and logistic aspects of anti-terrorist operations for a 120 man strong Company in N. Ireland.

Nov 1992 – Jun 1993 Captain – United Nations Military Observer – Cambodia

Working in a small, largely unsupported, 4-man team in Cambodian jungle undertaking intelligence gathering and peace support tasks as part of a UN force.
Responsible as medic for health of team and medical support to local population, carrying out over 50 battlefield casualty evacuations under fire and organising public health projects for 4000 refugees.
French / English interpreter for team.
Responsible for local UN agency security and support to national elections, reporting to UN Security Council.
Awarded the Military Cross for gallantry.
