Turnaround Manager

Turnaround Manager

Work Experience

January 2001 - Present Manager/Owner
CTA-group b.v. | Haarlem, the Netherlands |
CTA-group Ltd. | Tokyo, Japan
Translation & Publishing | Consultancy | Workflow design.
My role:
• Development of app-generating workflow
• Training of translators and "DTP-workers" on the app-generating workflow
• October 2013 – June 2015.
The European dealers of a Japanese multinational producing Construction Machinery had difficulties in informing their prospects/clients. The only sales support they had were printed sales brochures.
I’ve had meetings with the European dealers to collect their requests. With these requests in mind I designed and developed an app (phone/tablet/desktop) that allows them to dynamically filter and present products based on any criterion (size/capacity/speed/etc.) they want.
Implementation of this app included training of the dealers.
• April 2014 – June 2015
For a Chinese multinational we developed an app similar to the one as for the above mentioned Japanese client. I extended this app with an editing tool, enabling dealers to not only modify the apps, but also generating complete new ones. As one can imagine, tool training for the editing tool was more extensive and intense; dealers were not used to activities like this.
• Mid 2008 – mid 2009
A Japanese multinational producing office machines used to outsource 100% of their Translation & Documentation needs. I was hired by the company to take inventory on their future needs and create a plan to set up a new (internal) Translation & Documentation department. This included soft- and hardware selection, defining new specs & procedures, setup a network of translators + DTP-workers and training their staff, both in the Japanese headquarters and the major part of their European country offices.
Nowadays, all of their multilingual & documentation specialists work in a unified way according to the new procedures on the new platform.
The company estimates they have realized annual savings on Translation & Documentation of >60%.

2012 - 2013 Turnaround manager
Seishinsha Printing & DTP | Takasaki, Japan |
Turnaround management, workflow re-design, implementation.
• Seishinsha produces weekly sales brochures/catalogues. DTP was done the old fashion way: copy/paste. I was hired by the company because they had a structural cashflow problem. There was a misbalance in the printing company: app. 80 employees for printing against 70 DTP-workers.
• I introduced and implemented a central publishing system that allowed 12 DTP-workers to do all the work.
• The plan was to reduce the number of DTP-workers. Instead, due to the more efficient way of producing and the resulting lower prices, more sales for DTP was generated. Today Seishinsha is a DTP studio (>120 DTP-workers) with printing capacity.

January 1999 - November 2001 Managing director / shareholder
InfoTrans b.v. Translation & Publishing | Hoofddorp, the Netherlands |
InfoTrans Ltd. Translation & Publishing | Tokyo, Japan |
Startup and transfer activities from Shinyo Europe & Shinyo Japan
Due to the (in hindsight) undesired company structure of Shinyo Ltd., all activities were shifted to a new entity: InfoTrans b.v.
My role:
• Founding the company
• General management of the company
• Hiring and training staff
• Negotiate with clients and suppliers on workflow, lead times & pricing

April 1998 - March 1999 Consultant
Shinyo Japan Ltd., Translation & Publishing | Urawa, Japan |
Shinyo Europe Ltd., Translation & Publishing | Hoofddorp, the Netherlands |
Reorganization & interim management.
Shinyo was in a situation where a large turnover could not cover the high costs.
My role:
• Negotiate with suppliers and financers
• Implement a digital production flow
• Educate & train staff
• Resize both the European and Japanese office
Due to the (in hindsight) undesired company structure, I advised to shift all activities to a new entity: InfoTrans b.v.

October 1997 - March 1998 Technical manager
Elsevier Science b.v. | Amsterdam, the Netherlands |
Re-design of workflow, procedures and supply chain management.
My role:

• Weekly visits to the larger European Digital Content Developers and video conferencing with the India-based suppliers to monitor and protect Elsevier's regulations, specifications and workflow.
• In-house training (Amsterdam & Oxford) of the Pre-publishing department to use the new central publishing system. Staff had to be trained to unify and standardize the incoming data (text & images) and enter it according to the rules in the (pre )publishing system.
• Report bugs in the (pre )publishing system and 'translate' change requests from clients to instruct the software developers.

June 1996 - September 1997 Turnaround manager
Data Concept Documentation Services b.v. | Boxtel, the Netherlands
Re-design of workflow, procedures and supply chain management.
My role: responsible for changing the conventional way of translation and localization into a digital workflow. This included a SWOT analysis, creation of a new team, selection of CAT-software (Computer Aided Translation), software for scheduling/purchasing/logistics, as well as the implementation of these programs.
All this resulted in a second assignment; making the company ready to sell. Also this part was done successfully.

ERP implementation & reorganization at printing companies
• RR Donnelly, Chicago, USA

• Joh. Enschede, Haarlem, the Netherlands

• At RR Donnelly I was involved in the software selection and management of the implementation team.
• At Perry Printing we used the implementation of the ERP software to carry out a full reorganization and restructuring of the company. This meant developing a new production flow, relocating staff and defining the supply chain. One of the more challenging topics was training and motivating the sales department.
