Proprietor, February 1987 – to date
Founder and proprietor of broadly-based management consultancy providing services within the telecoms and IT industries. Interim management a speciality including taking projects through from conception to implementation. Assignments since 1998 have included acting as interim Commercial Director in a GSM start-up operation, interim Commercial Director in an electronics company, being Marketing Adviser in a cellular licence bid and advising a business start-up as MD-designate, Project Manager for billing system implementations at CRESTCo in the City of London and at Maltacom in Malta. Currently working as interim manager at Autocall Limited, a Vodafone Service Provider based in Middlesbrough.
Marketing, sales and operational projects have been at the forefront. Business planning and financial analysis tasks have also been prominent. Involvement with the definition and creation of new services and products and their market introduction has been a significant element in a number of projects undertaken. Provision of advise to telcos on the choice of billing systems and support to a billing supplier have both been undertaken in recent years.
The most recent projects have included acting as specialised expert witness in a business legal case, undertaking market analysis, primary market research, product development, strategic planning, operational implementations and business modelling as well as interim management.
Projects have been undertaken in Belgium, Holland, Malta, Moldova, Russia, South Africa and Switzerland as well as in England and Scotland.

General Manager, June 2002 – March 2003
Managing Vodafone Service Provider operation. Controlling Marketing, Sales, Customer Service, Inventory, Billing, Financial Administration, Engineering, Product Servicing.

Created new Sales & Marketing strategy based on a new Appointed Dealer network and higher-quality Dealer Managers / Field Sales Consultants. Replaced half of existing team of twelve staff. Recruited and managed three Field Sales Consultants. Initiated recruitment of new Dealer network. Set new approach for Sales and Customer Service. Introduced structured management approach to replace previous proprietorial regime (the four Directors are now involved in a new venture but retain some day-to-day involvement in Autocall). Introduced new products (vehicle tracking via the Internet and mobile data solutions).

Cerillion Technologies Limited
Senior Project Manager, March 2001 – June 2002
Managed initial planning of the implementation of the Cerillion project for CRESTCo in the City of London (March – July). After a sale was made in Malta to Maltacom, Cerillion asked me to undertake overall project management of the implementation of the Cerillion billing system for Maltacom and its subsidiary DataStream and to join the company’s staff to do so. I became a temporary employee from 3 September 2001. The Maltacom project involved me in being away from the UK for longer than expected and I therefore reluctantly tendered my resignation effective from 18 March (finally leaving on 14 June).

Axeon Limited
Commercial Director, August 1999 – October 1999
Stepped in at very short notice as Commercial Director to replace a Director taken ill. Assisted with search for Government project funding. Undertook partnership negotiations for suitable projects. Stayed three months until Director returned to part time working.

Voxtel
Commercial Director, April 1998 – July 1998
Part of multi-national team assembled by France Telecom to implement the first GSM licence in Moldova. Created a commercial operational team, marketing & sales strategy, product definitions, tariffs and approach to the market. Contract due to continue to end-1998 but unacceptable behaviour by some of the French Directors caused me to resign early.

Multitone Limited
Senior Project Manager, January 1995 – June 1995
Stepped into vacancy at very short notice. Originally planned to be for four weeks but extended to nearly six months. Re-organised the small team and refocused sales and marketing. Repaired poor inter-departmental relationships with Engineering. Helped recruit permanent successor.

International Connect Limited
Commercial Director (designate), January 1993 – October 1993
Created new company exploiting opportunities for international telecommunications resale. Created commercial structure, financial relationships and sales & marketing strategies. Owner decided to sell the business in October 1993.

Space-Tel plc
Sales & Marketing Director, February 1990 – August 1990
Provided strategy and implementation of sales and marketing for a cellular Service Provider. Grew sales but the business practices of the company meant heavy cash requirements were unavoidable. The company went into liquidation in October 1990.

C-Com International Limited
Director & Managing Director, January 1988 – January 1990
Managed commercial operations for a cellular and paging manufacturer and distributor. Acquired Service Provider licence from Vodafone. Created Appointed Dealer network. Products suffered unexpected technical problems that the company did not manage effectively.

Business Radio Communications (BRC) Limited
Director & Non-Executive Director, February 1987 – January 1988
Took over ailing mobile dealership (of which I had been Chairman when at Octagon). Replaced entire sales team. Recruited new General Manager. Stepped aside from an executive role once the GM was established.

Senior Investment Manager, August 1986 – January 1987
Responsible for the analysis and evaluation of proposals for venture capital finance. Operated as non-executive Chairman and as non-executive Director of a number of Octagon companies.

British Telecom Mobile Phone Division
Commercial Manager & Head of Retail, September 1982 – August 1986
Pre-cellular
Managed the pre-cellular manual and automatic VHF radiophone networks. Planned, developed and managed the market growth of the automatic service to growth rates of 10% per month in the year before cellular service opened. Grew the business from £8m pa to over £20m pa (2001 = c. £50m pa) in two years. Introduced BT’s first mobile phone products into the market and developed the first truly commercial marketing campaign for BT. Created the embryo BT dealer network and developed joint marketing strategy for the indirect and direct channels.
Cellular
Created and built a business with turnover in excess of £25m pa (2001 = c. £60m pa) in less than 18 months. Introduced the first voice-control mobile phone (Telecom Topaz) using BT/US/Danish technology. Created a new business for BT in retail cellular service provision. Grew the overall team from 4 to 128 staff. Developed a powerful and highly effective independent dealer network. Established the marketing and sales strategy and managed its practical implementation. Managed a marketing budget of £1.5m pa. (2001 = c. £4m pa). Created marketing, sales, product management and operations divisions. Managed the development of marketing and sales outlets through BT and non-BT organisations.
Overall
Grew and built business divisions from £8m pa to £45m+ pa (2001 = c.£100m pa) in less than four years. Created the market basis from which BT could establish and maintain the dominant position in cellular retailing.

Granada TV Rental
Viewdata Manager, January 1979 – September 1982
Located within the Marketing Department, brought viewdata (videotex) products and technology to the Granada Group and introduced retailing to what was at that time a wholly rental environment. Managed the development of products, the creation and execution of marketing and sales strategy and the introduction of products and services into the business and domestic markets.
